La jeune Philomène de Watteville est des plus beaux partisans de Besançon. Un jeune et brillant avocat vient de s'installer: Albert Savarus. Cet homme ambitieux reste cependant discret et intrigue Philomèle. Son attrait pour lui ne fait que croître quand apparaît une nouvelle signée par cet homme: «L'Ambitieux par amour», histoire dans laquelle un homme veut réussir le pouvoir épouser une princesse italienne dès qu'elle sera veuve. L'imagination de Philomène s'enflamme et elle décide de tout mettre en œuvre pour découvrir qui est Albert Savarus, ces relations, sa vie, sans en mesurer les conséquences tragiques.
On peut imaginer sans peine la dimension biographique de ce roman quand on sait que Balzac écrit ce texte alors qu'il vient d'apprendre la mort du comte Hanski, nouvelle riche d'espoir pour lui.

Honore de Balzac

Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist, short story writer, and playwright. Regarded as one of the key figures of French and European literature, Balzac’s realist approach to writing would influence Charles Dickens, Émile Zola, Henry James, Gustave Flaubert, and Karl Marx. With a precocious attitude and fierce intellect, Balzac struggled first in school and then in business before dedicating himself to the pursuit of writing as both an art and a profession. His distinctly industrious work routine—he spent hours each day writing furiously by hand and made extensive edits during the publication process—led to a prodigious output of dozens of novels, stories, plays, and novellas. La Comédie humaine, Balzac’s most famous work, is a sequence of 91 finished and 46 unfinished stories, novels, and essays with which he attempted to realistically and exhaustively portray every aspect of French society during the early-nineteenth century.

A colourless and insignificant young person, carefully brought up by Mama, so that 'at seventeen Rosalie had never read anything but the Lettres Edifiantes and some works on heraldry', she nonetheless has an unbending mind of her own, most particularly in her resolve never to marry the man her mother intends her for.When the intriguing Albert Savarus - a successful, but mysterious, lawyer and later newspaper editor - arrives in town, Rosalie hears of him at dinner parties and becomes obsessed with him. But her seemingly unimportant manoeuvres ('all the time she was pondering these machinations, the extraordinary girl was working slippers for her father with the most innocent air in the world') have a massive outcome...This was a wonderful read, both for the little moments of humour and the plot development.
