PHOTOGRAPHY: A REFLECTION OF THE WORLD

A highlight of spring in Paris, the festival of young European photography, Circulation(s), returns for its 14th edition, brimming with discoveries, events, and workshops. The Centquatre hosts it for two months, featuring around twenty young talents from across Europe. The 2024 edition focuses on Ukraine, honoring four artists: Maryna Brodovska, Lisa Burkeyeva, Yehveniia Laptii, and Dima Tolkachov.

The Feminine Plural

When Irving Penn met her during a photo shoot for magazine, Lisa Fonssagrives was already a runway star. At the MEP, more than 170 prints, collected by her son from”. This pioneer of photojournalism denounced the situation of the most disadvantaged classes by portraying the Mexican people. This retrospective exhibition at the Jeu de Paume reveals her precursory vision as well as her powerful singularity. A century later, Marine Peixoto, the fourth laureate of the Le Bal/ Adagp Young Creation Award in 2021, still poses the same questions. With her project “Bercy Street Workout” displayed in the 18th at Le Bal, a space dedicated to documentary images, she articulates the societal and aesthetic stakes of today around the human being. She tracks muscle, sweat, energy. And photographs at the pace of the athletes she shoots. Her work becomes a feat and exhaustion, exhaustion of a place, but also of her gaze. German photographer Henrike Stahl, the second artist invited to the Instants residency by Château Palmer and Leica, is passionate about the margin, the in-between, transitioning ideas. In benevolent images with a joyful palette, she conveys, over the months, the winemaker’s work with a complicit sensitivity. At the Jeu de Paume, it’s the same sharp eye on invisibility that drives Bertille Bak. The artist immerses herself in communities of people forgotten, sidelined by society. From this cohabitation arise fictional narratives, sensitive, humorous, poetic images that reveal the violence suffered by these marginalized populations. The incisive gaze of a great writer is still felt at the MEP. “”, confides Annie Ernaux. The exhibition weaves a link between texts from the Nobel Prize in Literature’s book, «Le journal du dehors» (1993), and photographs from the MEP collections.
