It was a prominent French radio host who was saying it, just as we were about to begin a program together on France Culture. “Why must Americans be so loud? On the street, in restaurants—they are loud!” He was half-teasing, half-provoking me. Ruefully, I had to agree with him. And in the age of Trump, his remark struck me with special force.
