The Kinfolk Way of Life

Neutral colours, minimalist furniture and a pure, minimal vibe… Kinfolk magazine defends a simple, well-thought-out take on style that is unmistakable. Its aesthetic has undoubtedly contributed to the magazine’s phenomenal success, so it should come as no surprise that this is exactly what you see inside Kinfolk cofounder Nathan Williams’ apartment.

The first issue of Kinfolk magazine was published in 2011 and right from the start it established itself as a bible for creative professionals and aesthetically inclined amateurs. Its polished aesthetic has inspired thousands of Instagrammers to adopt the Kinfolk way of life and post photos of frothy lattes and their immaculate, minimalist interiors. Thanks to this sudden visibility, the independent publication was able to rapidly establish its reputation, which in turn boosted its success, although the vision of its cofounder Nathan Williams certainly played a major part as well. “The original idea was to create a publication with a group of friends, a magazine in our own image that would highlight the pleasures of sharing a good meal and coming together around the table”, he explains. “However it wasn’t long before our readers made it clear that they wanted a more global approach.”

Every quarter, from one issue to the next, Kinfolk branched out covering new subjects: today it focuses on lifestyle and has established its position as an ambassador of slow living. Thanks to its books (The Kinfolk Entrepreneur and The Kinfolk Home etc), a clothing brand of well-tailored, classic apparel (Ouur Collection) and a gallery in the centre of Copenhagen, Kinfolk has become a total brand that instils its signature aesthetic into each project.

The interior of Nathan Williams’ apartment, nestled in the heart of the Danish capital, looks like it came straight out of a magazine. “Our editorial team moved to Copenhagen because we were perfectly in tune with Danish culture, lifestyle and values”, says the young businessman of Canadian origin. He fell for the bright volumes of this space in the town centre and saw its many possibilities. The apartment lies just a stone’s throw from Christiansborg Palace, the National Museum of Denmark and the canal that crosses the small capital. Nathan lives for his travels, finding inspiration in Japanese and Scandinavian design, as illustrated by his home’s pure, uncluttered rooms and their beautiful and functional furniture. The apartment’s centrepiece is Nathan’s workspace, a room bathed in light with a breathtaking view of the city. The desk he designed himself stands proudly alongside chairs by Jean Prouvé for Vitra, a lamp by American lighting designers Rich Brilliant Willing and a carefully selected display of books on art and photography. An unparalleled curator, Nathan Williams proves that simplicity and minimalism can be the keys to a successful interior. Welcome to the world of Kinfolk!
