After finishing high school, he was admitted to the law school of Thessaloniki, and in 1966 he immigrated to Canada. He is considered a pioneer in Canada for being one of the first immigrants to be appointed as assistant to a cabinet minister. In the federal by-election of 1982, he ran as a member of parliament and drew wide media attention when he defeated for the nomination a high-profile opponent from the world of media and Canadian establishment, the coowner of the Toronto Sun newspaper, Peter Worthington.
