The son of a merchant sea captain and a homemaker, he moved with his parents and five siblings to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and then to the Panama Canal Zone, where he attended high school. He graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a B.A. in economics. He received an M.S. in finance and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois.He is a retired economist with the federal government. In 1986, he coauthored an award-winning book entitled "Financing the Agricultural Sector: Future Challenges and Policy Alternatives" (Westview Press).Over the years, he has written for "New Covenant," a magazine of Catholic Spirituality, and "Our Sunday Visitor." Gabriel has written three books on fatherhood: "To Be a Father: 200 Promises That Will Transform You, Your Marriage, and Your Family" (Moorings Press, 2010) and "Speaking to the Heart: A Father's Guide to Growth in Virtue" (Moorings Press, 2011). His most recent book is "The Indispensable Dad: A Guide to Cultivating Family Happiness, Virtue, and Success" (Scepter Publishers 2020). He also edited a book on Catholic apologetics entitled "Catholic Controversies: Understanding Church Teachings and Events in History" (Moorings Press, 2010). He recently wrote a book for grandparents entitled "Hope for your Grandchildren: Talking to the Third Generation About What Matters" (Scepter Publishers).Gabriel lives in Falls Church, Virginia, with his wife, Peggy.
