Henry D. Welch was born in 1931 and raised in the Big Thicket near the small town of Warren. This is East Texas, close to Louisiana and also close to the Huntsville prison. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1959 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. His stepfather knew Clyde and saw the death car in 1944. He also heard stories about them all his life.
Henry was in the air force from 1951 until 1955, stationed at San Antonio. He later worked in Vietnam as a civilian crafts director from 1969 to 1970. When he returned to the United States, he worked at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama, teaching deaf, blind, and multihandicapped children. From 1979 until 1991, he also worked for the Federal Corrections Institute in Talladega. He also operated an antique shop near his home.
