His father worked as the maintenance engineer at a factory that manufactured powdered milk, primarily to feed the armies during the second world war. The family lived in a company house next to the factory surrounded by dairy farms and open fields.
When the war ground to a halt the family moved to the large provincial city of Geelong where the boys finished schooling. Influenced by his tradesman father Alan began his working life as an apprentice Cabinet Maker, later he switched to carpentry and by his mid-twenties was running his own contracting business. It did not take him long to realise what a hard life it was building houses, so he switched to a retail career which he pursued with vigour for the rest of his working life.
Despite work commitments and by then helping to raise four children he returned to school and gained certificates in Management and Commerce.
Over the year’s management positions were held in New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and finally Sydney where he became Managing Director of a large chain of retail stores.
His passion for story telling began after he wrote and published his own life story,
A journey From Glenormiston. Other fiction books are: - The Box Thorn Hedge,
A Dangerous Journey and A Dangerous Direction.
With his wife Norma they now live on the Central Coast of New South Wales within close distance of Sydney to keep in touch with their four children and Eight grandchildren.voir moins
