One of his lifelong intellectual interests has been the study of slavery from ancient times to the present and this novel reflects that expertise. Dr. Aaronsen notes that slavery has been with us since the dawn of time. Although a few have always viewed slavery as abhorrent and inhumane, only in comparatively recent times has it been viewed as a moral issue. Slavery was commonly viewed as an inevitable part of human society and, indeed, a necessity for advanced civilization. Technology released us from the urgent need for forced labor, but slaves remained as convenient luxuries and symbols of wealth, status, and importance. These things are hard to give up and, even today, a few societies still condone slavery.voir moins
