He enjoyed photography and became curious about the chemistry of making pictures. He studied chemistry, photography, and theater while attending Ohio University.
During his summer breaks from college, he was employed at Dow Chemical Company as a research chemist, and there he received a patent for his packing design.
The next year, as the hippie movement began to spread across the country, he auditioned and was awarded the lead role in his first feature film, Sign of Aquarius. Later it was rereleased as Ghetto Freaks.
James moved to Los Angeles and gained popularity and awards as a male model. He juggled modeling and acting for many years, appearing in numerous feature films, TV programs, and TV commercials. As a contributing writer to various magazine publications and as a radio program producer, he learnt the facets of storytelling. He studied film editing to acquaint his self with scene timing.
