He is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain, an accomplished racing sailor and an aspiring fisherman. He is a Distinguished Alumni of St. Mary's High School in Annapolis and, between sailing adventures, graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.
