Though born in London, Walton spent much of his life traveling in the Iberian Peninsula and its American colonies, gaining firsthand insight into colonial administration, social structures, and the lived experience of conflict and captivity. His book A Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of the Late Prince of Spain demonstrates his focus on political intrigue, royal personages, and the turbulent relations between Spain and its colonies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Walton’s accounts—based on direct observation, documents, and official correspondence—were aimed at a British reading public fascinated by foreign courts and imperial drama. He also wrote extensively on Latin American independence movements and European colonialism, offering one of the earlier English-language perspectives on the decline of Old World empires in the New World.voir moins
