She was born on November 6, 1886 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, the eldest of three daughters, to Thomas Harlington Clere and Flora Westcott Clere. She was married to Roy Pritchard Chamberlin (1885-1965), who was also born and raised in Syracuse, New York. Their son William was born in 1912, and their daughter Louise followed in 1915. Ethel Clere Chamberlin died at the age of 44 in her native Syracuse on October 2, 1931 as a result of bronchial asthma. During her short life, she published three popular children’s books: Omar the Discontented Cat (1925), Shoes and Ships and Sealing Wax (1928), and Heroes of Peace (1929).
JANET LAURA SCOTT (1888-1968) was an American children’s book illustrator and watercolor artist. She also later designed Raggedy Andy dolls and books about the Bobbsey Twins. She met her Maine-born fellow artist husband Carroll Thayer Berry (1886-1978) in Chicago, and the couple moved to New England during the Depression, where their home in Wiscasset, Maine became a meeting place for craftsmen and artists of the region.
