Located in the upper valley of the Aar, the line originates from Meiringen station, on the Brünig line, the only metre-gauge railway operated by the CFF. With plenty of straight stretches, the line has no gradients steeper than 20 ‰. Its construction was closely linked to the implementation of a large hydroelectric complex in the Hasli and Grimsel area.
