Over the years he had nearly half a million consultations with people in his surgery, in their homes, in hospitals and occasionally on the streets in emergency situations. He had seen almost every possible sickness and injury that a person can have. When he first started his practice he soon saw that Mental Health Disorders were the most common causes of serious suffering for his patients, rich or poor, educated and uneducated, young and old, so he took a special interest in Mental Health Disorders.
In 1997 he set out to find better solutions for Perth’s epidemic of Drug and Alcohol problems and at first worked 10 hours a week in another doctor’s Drug and Alcohol Clinic. One afternoon at that Clinic he saw 5 heroin patients in a row who showed strong features of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). He then knew that he had to learn to understand, diagnose and treat ADD in order to help his Addiction Patients. He started his own Drug and Alcohol Clinic in 2001 and found that approximately 60% of his Heroin Patients and 90% of his Street Amphetamine Patients suffered from ADD and ADHD. It was also obvious that many patients suffered from Mental Health Disorders such as Insomnia, Anxiety and Depression, which had not been successfully treated previously.
Since then Dr Beck has been working on better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent the Mental Health Disorders that lead to Addictions, and better ways to prevent Addictions; better ways to Detox patients off Addictive Drugs and better ways to prevent them from relapsing back to Drugs.
Dr Neil Beck had created several E-Mental Health Tools, Educational Products and Websites to help people all over the world with Mental Health Disorders. His goal is to help people in distress live a better life through education and training. His current websites are:
