These methods are fine for cleaning track located close to the baseboard edges, but are awkward and somewhat acrobatic when dealing with more distant track.

In Issue 81 of Voie Libre, Thomas Schmid outlined a very ingenious solution to this problem. As my layout features stretches of track embedded in paving stones, the shape of the pad used by Thomas was not suitable, as the friction from the cork or felt would irretrievably damage such paving. However, I did retain the ideal of the handle. I therefore needed:

- Pads that were guided by wheels, but that would not have excessive side-play on curves. Meaning: no bogies!
